The lid button gives you quick access to a few simple commands for your Mill:
- Short press then press again and hold for 3 seconds: to unlock your bin
- Double-tap: to start or stop a Dry & Grind cycle
If you have a Mill 1st gen. or Mill Plus, it also comes with a lid lock designed with safety in mind. Here are a few tips on how to use it the additional lid lock features, accessible in the app, under My Mill > Lid Lock.
Start/Stop a Dry & Grind cycle from the lid button when lid lock is enabled
If engaged, you’ll first need to override the lock. To unlock the lid, press then press-and-hold the lid button for 3 seconds (short tap, long press). The lid will stay unlocked for 4 seconds. Then you can double tap the lid button to start or stop a Dry & Grind cycle.
- When the lid opens, the cycle pauses; the heater and grind motor both turn off, but the heater may still be hot. Don't remove the bucket while it's hot.
Always unlocked
When selected, you can add food scraps to your bin while a Dry & Grind cycle is running. When the lid opens, the cycle will pause. The heater and grind motor both turn off, but the heater may still be hot. Don't remove the bucket while it's hot.
With Always unlocked, if you overfill the bucket the lid may pop open and cause the Dry & Grind cycle to fail, so it's extra important not to overfill your bucket.
Tip: Make sure not to overfill the bucket and chop up large items. When the grind motors turn, it might push those scraps upwards into the lid, causing the cycle to stop. Alternatively, if you have a very fully bucket, before the cycle starts, change your setting to Always locked to ensure that a cycle runs.
Locked when running
When selected, any time your bucket is hot (above 140°F or 60°C), the lock will automatically turn on. Short press then press again and hold for 3 seconds to unlock your bin.
Mill Plus
- You will see a white lock icon on the bin when its locked
- To unlock the lid, press then press-and-hold the lid button for 3 seconds (short tap, long press). The lid will stay unlocked for 4 seconds.
Mill 1st gen.
- You will see a orange lock icon on the bin when its locked and hot
- To unlock the lid, press and hold the lid button for 3 seconds (long press). The lid will stay unlocked for 4 seconds.
Always locked
Beneficial for homes with kids or pets, when selected, your Mill will always lock upon closing. Hold the lid button for 3 seconds to open the lid. In the app, go to My Mill > Lid Lock, and you can choose another lock setting.
If you see that the lock turns orange, that's because the bucket is hot, and turning the Always Locked setting OFF will not unlock the bin.
You can add food scraps while a Dry & Grind cycle is running
Press and hold the lid button to unlock your bin and add more food scraps right on top. Your bin may automatically add some extra Dry & Grind time for your new scraps.
Mill Plus

- To unlock the lid, press then press-and-hold the lid button for 3 seconds (short tap, long press). The lid will stay unlocked for 4 seconds.
Mill 1st gen.
- You will see a white lock icon on the bin when its locked and not hot, and an orange lock icon when its locked and hot.
- To unlock the lid, press and hold the lid button for 3 seconds (long press). The lid will stay unlocked for 4 seconds.
Tip: You don't need to stop a cycle to add more scraps. Simply unlock the lid and add more. "Always locked," was designed for homes with curious kids and dexterous pets!
