We carefully designed the Mill to prevent odors. But if you’re experiencing some unwanted smells, there are a couple likely culprits.
Make sure your dust filter is clean, to enable proper airflow
Instructions can be found here.
The most common cause of stinky Food Grounds is moisture
To fix this, just start a Dry & Grind cycle in the app or double-tap the lid button (for Mill Plus, make sure the lock is disengaged first). We’ve noticed that seafood and vinegary food, like pickles, can make Food Grounds smell before they’re fully dry.
Mill Essential
- Ensure you emptied the entire volume of charcoal from the bag into the drawer
- Make sure the charcoal is level within the drawer and then re-secure the lid
- Slide the drawer back into your Mill and make sure it drops into place and the back panel sits flush with the back of the Mill.
Mill Plus
- Pull out the carbon filter canister from the back drawer of your Mill.
- Make sure the stickers are removed from the top and bottom.
- Place carbon filter upright into the drawer and slide it back into your Mill. You'll see it drop into place when the back panel sits flush with the back of the Mill.
Mill 1st gen.
- Press the top of the back cover to remove it.
- Pull out the odor filter and make sure the sticker is removed from the top and bottom.
- Set the filter back in place and apply pressure to ensure the rubber gasket is making contact with the Mill all the way around (you might need to push it in a little).
If neither of those steps solved the problem, it might be time for a filter replacement. The first hint that you need a new odor filter is the smell of vinegar near your Mill.
In the app, click My Mill > Carbon Filter. On app version 2.25.3 and up, you can also tap the Filter icon at the top right of the app homepage to jump straight to the filter page.
