Cleaning your bin
The Mill requires very little cleaning. You can wipe down the outside of your bin with a cloth, but you don’t need to clean the inside of the bucket or the paddles. If you see stuff stuck to the side of the bucket, don’t worry, it's harmless and will come off over time.
If you really want to wash the bucket, use warm water only (no soap) and a sponge. Do not put the bucket in the dishwasher and do not use any cleaning products or chemicals.
Cleaning the heating plate (2nd gen. only)
It's important to keep the heating plate clear of crumbs and scraps so that the bucket can sit flat on the heating plate. Each time you empty the bucket, double-check that the area on top of and around the heating plate is clean (in the bucket to bin connection area). Use a damp rag or paper towel to clean. For heavier messes, you can use a vacuum or sponge. Just don't use soap or any cleaning product.
Cleaning your Dust Filter
A clogged dust filter may make it harder for your bin to dry leading to increased run times. In addition, a clogged dust filter can cause odors to escape your bin. To ensure that your kitchen is odorless you’ll want to clean it from time to time. Each time you empty the bucket, give it a quick look. You’ll find it on the left side of your kitchen bin when you lift the bucket cover.
If there is any debris on your filter, just wipe your fingers along its surface, the same way you would clean a dryer’s lint trap (learn how here). Anything that comes off the filter can be placed into the bucket.

Charcoal Odor Filter Maintenance
You’ll likely need to replace your charcoal odor filter every 12+ months. This will vary based on use (learn more here). Yearly charcoal filters are included for subscriptions. If you purchase the Mill outright, you receive one charcoal filter with purchase ($80 value).
