Download the Mill app
Download the Mill app on your phone from either the Apple App Store or Google Play Store. The app will guide you through unboxing and setup from start to finish, including all of the steps outlined below.
Unbox your Mill
Follow the on-box and in-app instructions to unbox your Mill, or with the video here.
Choose a location for your Mill
Tip: Before moving your Mill, take out the bucket and carbon filter and set them aside. It’ll be much lighter that way.
We designed the Mill to be in your kitchen, so it’s convenient to add food scraps while cooking or after meals.
But if the kitchen isn’t the best spot for your Mill, here’s a quick list to help you find the right spot:
- Indoors: in a space that stays between 10°C (50°F) and 30°C (86°F) and not where any pests may hang out.
- Near an outlet: the Mill needs to stay plugged in, so find a spot within 8.2 feet (2.5 M) of a 3-prong outlet.
- On a hard, flat surface: Make sure all four feet are firmly on the floor and not wobbling.
- In a well-ventilated area: to allow for proper airflow, place the Mill at least 6 inches away from all walls front, left or right and in a well ventilated space.
Unpack the carbon filter
Remove the back drawer of your Mill. Inside, you’ll find a bag of activated carbon. Open the bag and pour the entire bag into the drawer. We recommend doing this step over a kitchen sink - as it can get a bit dusty. Gently shake the drawer back and forth to make sure the charcoal is level.
Then, find the green lid (it came on the top cardboard pulp you removed in the first step). Toe-in the lid into place and use the hand screws to secure the lid. Slide the drawer back into your Mill. Make sure it clicks into place.

Plug it in and connect to Wi-Fi
You'll find the Mill's power cord in a box in the bucket.
- Plug the cable into the back of the Mill. Make sure it's fully inserted.
- Plug the power cable into your wall outlet. You should start to see a blue pulsing light next to the Mill lid button. Follow the prompts in your Mill app to get it paired and connected to your home Wi-Fi.

Pick your Mill's settings
The app will guide you through choosing what time you'd like your Mill to start cycles and you can even give your Mill a name!
Run your first cycle
Your Mill will automatically run a cycle based on your schedule selections. That said, you can run a cycle immediately via the app or by double tapping the button on the lid.
