We carefully designed the kitchen bin to prevent odors. But if you’re experiencing some unwanted smells, there are a couple likely culprits.
Make sure your dust filter is clean, to enable proper airflow
Instructions can be found here.
The most common cause of stinky Food Grounds is moisture
To fix this, just start a Dry & Grind cycle in the app or double-tap the lid button (for 2nd gen., make sure the lock is disengaged first). We’ve noticed that seafood and vinegary food, like pickles, can make Food Grounds smell before they’re fully dry.
Make sure your charcoal filter is firmly seated in the bin, and that its stickers are removed
2nd gen.
- Pull out the charcoal canister.
- Make sure the sticker is removed from the top and bottom.
- Slide the charcoal canister back into the bin. You see it drop into place when the back panel is flush with the back of the bin.
1st gen.
- Press the top of the back cover to remove it.
- Pull out the charcoal filter and make sure the sticker is removed from the top and bottom.
- Set the filter back in place and apply pressure to ensure the rubber gasket is making contact with the bin all the way around (you might need to push it in a little).
If neither of those steps solved the problem, it might be time for a filter replacement. The first hint that you need a new charcoal filter is the smell of vinegar near your bin.
In the app, under Bin, click Menu, select Device, then select “Charcoal Filter” and "Request free replacement".
